The Original Zane Grey Cabin...
The original Zane Grey Cabin
was built in its remote location in the early 1920’s.
Zane Grey left Arizona in
1929 after a confrontation with the state’s Game and Fish Department. The Cabin
fell into severe disrepair. In the early 1950’s, local businessman Bill Goettl
discovered the cabin and purchased it from the Grey family. Using his own money
and labor, Goettl completely rebuilt the Cabin, turning it into a popular
tourist destination.
Prior to being destroyed
by the Dude Fire in 1990, it was a favorite historical destination
for
over 20,000 visitors a year. Even today, fans of Zane Grey, come to Payson asking
for directions to The Cabin.

Why We
Reconstructed "The Cabin"...
Zane Grey and his stories are
an important part of our nations Western Heritage and a part of our local
history as well, and many felt that this historical landmark needed to be
preserved for future generations. The replicated cabin is an historically
accurate educational exhibit, giving local residents and worldwide visitors the
opportunity to learn more about Zane Grey and his place in history.
The replicated cabin also
provides a superior venue for school tours to allow students to learn about Zane
Grey and the Rim Country area.
The Rim Country Museum
preserved many rare Zane Grey artifacts, and they have become a part of the Zane Grey
Cabin Exhibit.
Reconstruction of the Zane
Grey Cabin in Payson Arizona will not only benefit our nations Western Heritage,
but will also help to promote historical preservation -- allow for educational
opportunities in western literature, Arizona history and local lore -- and give
Payson a focal point for special events and festivals.
The newly reconstructed
cabin opened in October 2005 and is located on the knoll near the Rim Country
Museum at Green Valley Park in Payson Arizona.
